Jaipur - City Transport

Jaipur's frenzied flow of vehicles is at its heaviest during the morning and evening peak periods; it's best to avoid rush hours if you want to enjoy the sights and street activity. The city itself, particularly its modern part, is very spread out, and although it's pleasant to walk around the Pink City, you may need some form of transport to get you there.

Unmetered yellow-top taxis have stands on MI Road, and there are countless auto-rickshaws buzzing around at all times of day and night. Fares, as ever, should be fixed in advance.

Given Jaipur's chronic pollution problems, it makes sense to opt for cycle power while you're in the city. Cycle rickshaws travel no slower through the congestion than autos, and are much cleaner and cheaper. As long as you keep your wits about you, the city is also a fun place to explore by bicycle . Many budget hotels rent bikes out to their guests; failing that, you can rent one for Rs25-30 a day from a place in the passage by 286 Kishan Pole Bazaar, about 100m north of the Ajmeri Gate, and from the Muslim cycle repair-shop just off Nirwan Marg, near the Jaipur Inn .

Cars with drivers can be rented most cheaply and reliably through the Arya Niwas Hotel , or RTDC at the Tourist Hotel , MI Road. Typical costs are around Rs375 return to Amber, or Rs675 to Samode. For destinations not covered by fixed fares, expect to pay around Rs75-100 per hour, plus Rs4.5 per kilometre.
