The formerly elegant colonnaded front of Chowringhee Road, with its long line of colonial villas and palaces, is now in a sorry state of decay and perpetually crowded with hawkers and shoppers. The only one of its grand institutions to survive relatively unscathed is the Victorian Grand Hotel which, after endless renovations and changes of management remains a haven of colonialism, with its palm court inspired by the famous Raffles of Singapore.
